Tool Handling

Tool Handling

Tool changers and magazines index fast and reverse often. RV-E and RV-C Series gears hold each position with high rigidity and low lost motion.

  • ATC arms, tool magazines and carousel systems
  • Backlash and lost motion less than 1 arc-min
  • RV-C Series hollow shaft for piping and cables
Indexing Tables

Indexing Tables

Rotary and trunnion tables carry heavy fixtures off center. RV gears with integrated main bearings support that load and index with high repeatability.

  • Large-part indexing, rotary and trunnion tables
  • Integrated main bearings carry the moment load
  • RH-N-Kit bolts directly onto the servo motor
Tool Changers

Tool Changers

Tool changers and chain or disk magazines see fast indexing, frequent reversals and hard stops. RV gears combine high torsional rigidity with backlash and lost motion below 1 arc-min, so each pocket stops where the arm expects it.

An E-stop capacity of 5x rated torque adds margin for tool crashes and emergency stops, the peak loads a tool changer has to handle.

Rotary Tables

Rotary Tables

Indexing tables, trunnions and B- and C-axes must hold position while the spindle cuts. The integrated angular ball bearings in RV gears support large moment loads, and typical repeatability is 20 to 30 arc-sec from one index to the next.

Carrying the load inside the gear keeps the table compact, removes separate support bearings from the design and simplifies assembly.

Hollow Shafts

Hollow Shafts

Multi-tasking machines and double-column machining centers often need to pass piping and cables through a rotating axis instead of around it. The RV-C Series keeps the accuracy, rigidity, torque and load support of the RV design and adds a hollow shaft for this routing.

Hollow shaft options reach up to a 5 in. through hole, which leaves room for larger line bundles, sensor cables and air lines.

Positioners

Positioners

Welding positioners and headstock tables turn heavy weldments at a controlled speed. The RH-C/CA gearhead is designed for this work, with a slim profile, an integrated base flange and fittings for major servo motors.

A large-diameter hollow shaft leaves room to route cables and hoses through the table, and the gearhead ships sealed with grease.

Selection Guide

Machine tool axes are sized by the whole cycle, not only by peak torque. Work through these points with your cycle data before you size a gear. Your answers narrow the catalog to a short list of models to compare.
  • Define index angle, time and dwell
List index angle, index time and dwell for every move in the cycle.
Add reversals, hard stops, emergency stops and tool crashes as well.
  • Size for the full moment load
Off-center fixtures, pallets and tools add tilting moment to the axis.
Integrated main bearings carry it without separate support bearings.
  • Choose a solid or a hollow shaft
The RV-E Series is the basic solid-shaft model of the RV design.
The RV-C Series adds a hollow shaft for routing piping and cables.
  • Decide on a component or a housed unit
An RH-N-Kit pairs an RV-N gear with flanges, seals and fasteners.
It bolts to your servo motor and cuts engineering and lead time.
  • Confirm ratio, motor speed and service life
Pick a ratio that keeps the servo motor in its best speed range.
Then check rated life against your duty cycle before release.
